Why are you so passionate about healthy lifestyles for
children and adults?
My father was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes when I was an
infant. The entire family adopted a "diabetic diet" routine, but
only when my dad felt committed to it. Because he was so young when
he was diagnosed (27) and because he felt invincible, he didn't take
control of his disease until he was much older. I watched him
disintegrate right before my very eyes, even though he became very
rigid in his routine. He was my best friend and I lost him days
after his 65th birthday.
Now, statistics in our country have become alarming indicating
that a significant portion of our population are on their way to
becoming diabetic. The most frightening statistic is the number of
children being diagnosed on a daily basis. And while many don't
understand diabetes, its important to note that it is a fatal
disease with no cure. It is true that you can slow its progress and
live longer with it than many other diseases, but its a killer and
few people recognize that fact.
How long did it take you to lose the weight?
I spent almost 18 months losing 159 pounds. Some days were such a
struggle, but because I saw such major results over time, it kept me
motivated. I also made the weight loss so dramatic for my friends
and family - not seeing them for months at a time so that when they
did see me, their reactions to my changing appearance kept me going
as well.
And by the way, it is a lifestyle change, not a temporary fix. If
you view it as a temporary change in habits, your results will be
temporary as well.
How do you stay motivated for such a long period of
time?
I needed a lot of support and encouragement from people. Because
I'm a little stubborn, I also picked a trainer based on personality.
I needed someone to be accountable to who wouldn't allow me to make
excuses or miss sessions. Every now and then I needed to be bullied
and reminded why I started this journey to begin with.
How has your life changed?
I was always very outgoing and bubbly. Always the life of the
party - so to speak- but that has intensified. I absolutely love
accepting invitations to parties whereas during my struggles with
weight, I missed out on a lot of great events, including a class
reunion, because I was embarassed. One day I was putting together a
photo album for my grandmother. I realized that there were few
pictures that included me. I remembered that I often chose to take
the photo rather than be in it because my self image was so poor. It
saddened me because there were so many events and gatherings with
relatives that have since passed and I allowed my weight to alter my
participation one way or the other.
I have to admit that while being able to find clothes in the
junior department on some retailers is SUPER cool, I still hate to
shop! (and I still don't like lycra bike shorts!). |
